Poison Ivy by Pencilbags Poison Ivy by Pencilbags
Another in the Bat Series. Since Harley Quinn was the previous submission, I went with Poison Ivy. She seemed to crop up a lot when I was researching the Harley Image. I have to say, that she was a bit difficult. She doesn't have a lot of accessories, and you can really hide a lot of problem areas with a good billowing cape! I also tried to produce the image a little differently this time.

I started with a small sketch maybe about 4.5" tall. I scanned the image and cleaned it up a bit, converted into a blue line and shrunk the head slightly and re-positioned some of the features. I faded the lines slightly and then printed it out to fit onto an 8.5x11 sheet. On that image I inked the lines with a Pitt pen, tightening up the lines and filling in detail. On this level I started to fill in the detail of the background. After this stage I laid the image over a light table and traced the dark lines onto the light green page. That page got some additional detail and then finally the color! The color was done with copic markersI also used a brush for the first time to fill in the background with black ink. Something I haven't done before.

So, I still have to do this again to see if I can get better at it...and faster!

It does have a bit of a natural quality or something that isn't quite of this world.

Heh, well she and Harley do have a connection. =P

anyway, some nice touches on this rendition, the worn and patched garderners gloves make a certain amount of sense, and the gold bands on her arm make me wonder where she got them and why she wears them still.

Thanks!

I read that she and Harley had a thing between them that was at least implied. It has been a long time since I have read a Batman comic, but the characters have always intrigued me.

She was kind of a difficult one to decide how to present, there were the plants, but in a lot of the research it appears that she doesn't have a lot of clothes or gear so I picked and chose the gloves, the arm bands I am not sure where they come from, I saw them in a couple of reference images and thought it would be a good place to add a complimentary color without taking away from the hair and lips.

Mm, it's been heavily implied, and the creator of Harley has pretty much addmitted there was something going on.

Mm, so the armbands remain mysterious...

Thanks! I have some other Harry Potter images in my gallery that were good practice for her hair! Hair is something that I have been working on for a long time to try and get to be interesting! I appreciate your comment!

This is neat, I like the coloring a lot, the white outline is a really nice touch, I love how the background is all black but we can easily see what it is. Great job! :)

Have you ever heard of Gene Gonzales? He is an illustrator out of Florida somewhere where he can go to Rays games. Anyway he has a blog where he posts a new image every day, he outlined that process with what he calls Canson Cuties, he typically does individual drawings of superheroes, some random book illustrations but it appeared pretty straight forward at least so that you can keep developing a good sketch at increasing levels of detail. This is the first time I tried it, I am glad you liked it!

I had been planning for awhile to try it, but only recently felt like diving in. I bought some 8.5x11 canson paper that I am going to try printing the line art onto and then hit it with color, just to try and streamline the process.

HooHah, Mike, this is a welcomed addition to your series! AND, I feel that you've drawn her the way she was originally intended; sort of sickly, dirty complexion, the tattered outfit (love your scrappy gloves!), truly not "all there" with regards to reality. You've conveyed all that - - I like your comment, below, where she was such a minor player, back in the day, which is how I recall her, too, sort of a B-Grade villian, and that's what you've played off of! ALSO, a Big Approval of the inked-contrast background; super idea and execution, Mike. Cheers, Roger

She does seem a bit..."off" I am glad you noticed the gloves, I like adding little pieces, even though I am not sure if they are really noticeable! I guess I need to find someone else to draw now, the inking was a bigger deal than I expected, most probably given my lack of experience with the tools! Give me a good technical pen! ha!

You know, I certainly won't attempt to suggest (Mr. Freeze) your next Batman character (Mr. Freeze) for you to draw (Mr. Freeze) because I'm sure you have several (Mr. Freeze) in mind already. Yeah, Ivy needs to be "off" as she was supposed to be crazier than Selina, and she wasn't supposed to be terrifically a "knock out," either. I think you were "spot on", as our English friends like to say.

Not to accuse you of psychic powers or even ESPN, but I have a small Mr Freeze doodle that I had started today! Scary. I guess what sadder is that I thought of him and then the Riddler before I remember The Joker. I can't say whose next...it just got cold, I wonder why? (I wasn't kidding about sketch, strange)

I recall a episode of Harley quinn and Posin Ivy, after joker took her forgranted one too many times Harley Quinn runs in to Ivy. Both are bored and try going out together to rob banks and such etc etc. And all that bad laid plans. Any how Joker gets win and that crazy gose looking for her how ever so dose Batman, it ends up both Ivy and Quinn get in deep and it ends with Joker beggin Quinn back. *aww*

Keep up the bat man villians! Its been years since I've seen them!

It is kind of funny how some of these villains were minor characters when I was a kid and their stories have evolved into these elaborate patterns of eco-terrorists and so forth. It also doesn't hurt that they started drawing the females a lot differently in the mid to late 80's until they became illustrated like they are today!

I need to find a good next villain. I have been doing some sketches on Robin and Batgirl, so we will see!

Might I suggest one? There was a minor villian in the series. She only had one show to her name. Which she never got a name. She was a kicked out model for being too old how she wore a plain mask and kidnapped and killed models and producers in get up for a different season. Like Halloween she had a sickle and was trying to tear bat man to ribbons.

Then there is the mad hatter. His wife Alice leaves him and he goes nuts as the mad hatter.

Just some ideas! Man I miss that series. :/
